Gulastras Splash had a long and successful endurance career. From 1993, when he was 5, through 2003, when he was 15, he competed in some 90 rides, going a total of 4,920 miles. Today, some endurance people seek his sons and daughters.
However, Gulastras Splash has much more going for him than his very credible endurance record, and his record as a sire of endurance competitors. He is also an attractive horse of merit in areas of conformation, legs, and Arabian type, and further boasts a rather extraordinary pedigree, partly because of the 21st century closeness of some horses foaled a long time ago, indeed, and partly because of the importance to the Arabian breed of many of his ancestors.
As can be seen on his pedigree, Gulastras Splash is a topline grandson of Gulastra, one of the great American-bred Arabian sires in history and still of significant influence today (in 2007). Of course, being a grandsire makes the Gulastra influence in Gulastras Splash more immediate than in individuals whose pedigrees show Gulastra farther back. Gulastra was foaled in 1924 - that was 83 years ago (in 2007) - and there are not many living Arabians who can claim that one of their grandparents was foaled so long ago as that.
The rest of Gulastra Splash’s pedigree contains an impressive roster of “who’s who” horses of yesteryear.
His four great-grandsires were: *Astraled (by Mesaoud), Indraff (by *Raffles), Balastra (by Gulastra), and Khalek (by Ferseyn). It can be seen, then, that Gulastra’s Splash was double Gulastra. It might be well to point out that the Gulastra son Balastra in this pedigree means something special. Although not as well known as some other Gulastra sons, Balastra was undoubtedly one of the best. He is correct, extremely stylish, and very beautiful - and his dam was the great broodmatron Bazrah.
The four mares in the great-granddam positions in Gulastra Splash’s pedigree were: Gulnare (by *Rodan x *Ghazala, she the only mare bred by Ali Pasha Sherif ever brought to the United States), Nafri (by *Nasr), Mailat (by Farana), and Jacobs Sheba (a double granddaughter of *Ferdin).
Gulastras Splash lives up to his illustrious pedigree. He not only proves that well bred Arabians “can do,” but he also has many desirable individual attributes. He is a well balanced horse with good shoulders and withers, a good strong back, strong loins, and good depth through the heart. He has excellent bone, joints, and feet. His legs stood up exceedingly well through all of his endurance work.
Gulastras Splash is owned by his breeder, Robbi Pruitt, of Redmond, Oregon.
