Aur-Fix is considered by some people to have been the most dazzling of all the Aurab sons. He was a horse who absolutely radiated presence with a rare sort of electrifying snap and crackle.
Aur-Fix was bred by James H. Hopkins, 29 Palms, California, who over the last four decades has bred many good Arabians. The day Aur-Fix was foaled he became of the property of Ted or Helen Taknen, Boise, Idaho. On May 15, 1978, at age 4, his ownership was transferred to Ted or HelenTaknen, or Ralph or Patricia Werner, Emmett, Idaho. A year later, on June 5, 1979, at age 5, Aur-Fix became the property of Ralph or Patricia Werner, Parma, Idaho.
Aur-Fix was about 10 years old when he was discovered by Dorothy “Bubbles” Reeder (later Kegler), then of Watsonville, California, who wanted a quality Aurab son. She and her daughter, Dawn, bought Aur-Fix; his ownership was transferred on January 1, 1985. Aur-Fix spent a few years in California before Bubbles and her family moved to Kuna, Idaho, where Aur-Fix lived the rest of his life at the family’s Moon Shadow Arabians.
While Aur-Fix was in California, he broke a front leg. It healed and he lived a long life afterwards with amazingly minimal disfigurement, but while he was undergoing the healing process he had to be kept confined and at first he spent a lot of time lying down, resting his other three legs (he had no trouble getting up and down on three legs). I went to see him one day and found him in his large, sunny stall, lying in his deep bedding. He looked up at me, but I was nobody of particular interest to him. I talked to him and he listened, and for awhile I thought he might get up to come to me to be petted, but he decided he was more comfortable resting. He was in no pain and soon seemed to be dozing, resting on his chest. Then he heard his owner, Bubbles, coming down the lane to the barn. He pricked up his ears to listen, and as she opened the barn door he lay down flat, audibly moaning. This very intelligent horse was really making the most of all the loving attention he was getting from his owner and he wanted more of it from her. She went into his stall and knelt down beside him, petting and talking to him. He moaned some more. He wanted his head in her lap. She stayed with him awhile, then I said, “I wonder what he’ll do when you leave?” She said, “Watch and see.” She left - to his obvious disappointment. He immediately (and quite easily) got to his feet so he could watch her leaving the barn. Only then he did come to me for petting. What a character!
In addition to his stunning presence, Aur-Fix was an outstanding individual with a very good inherited trot. This considerably better than average trot usually also denotes overall athletic potential in many other fields of endeavor. Aur-Fix was of ideal balanced conformation. He had a nice and attractive Arabian head. His neck was long, light, and well shaped. It came out of his shoulders correctly high and had a naturally clean throat. He had the excellent shoulders and withers of the Aurab line. He was short backed, had good depth through the heart, a good chest, and nice hindquarters. His legs were good in alignment, proportion, and structure. He had particularly strong gaskins.
One of the most wonderful features of Aur-Fix was his totally splendid high, straight (meaning never wry) Arabian tail carriage. There are some people who think that a horse who stops and does not then drop his tail has been gingered, Aur-Fix demonstrated the fallacy of that being a 100% true belief. In all of his life Aur-Fix was never gingered, but he often stopped with his tail held very high - and kept it that way for a time (depending on his mood). His spectacular tail carriage certainly contributed to the beautiful overall Arabian type and style of this horse.
Not only was Aur-Fix one of the best sons of Aurab, but he was from a good dam of excellent breeding. Lyttl-Miss was a topline granddaughter of the great Crabbet-bred *Serafix. The sire of Lyttl-Miss, Lyttl-Fix, was out of the grand mare Amirta, a widely admired mare in her day, even to being considered by some to have been one of the noteworthy mares of her day, based on her excellent quality and type. Amirta was a granddaughter of the great Abu Farwa. On her dam’s side, Lyttl Miss was a great-granddaughter of Sureyn, one of the great stallions and sires of his day; he was a rare double grandson of Skowronek.
During his life Aur-Fix sired a total of 28 foals; they were about 61% colts and about 39% fillies (17 to 11); they were foaled from 1977 through 1998. Of his foals, only 9, or 32%, have ever bred, and of those only 7, or 25% of his total number sired, are still (in 2011) breeding on (five of those breeding on are daughters).
It is unfortunate that this very special horse is not leaving more widespread influence, but today people who are lucky enough to have his surviving get treasure and appreciate them as they deserve, and breed from them when possible.
