Beaus Black Lady is a centerpiece of the black segment of my breeding program. She is the result of my first use of the renowned black stallion Nv Beau Bey and she is everything I had wanted and hoped to get.
I had heard about Nv Beau Bey and so went to see him. Seeing him made it clear to me that I had to use this truly outstanding horse in my breeding program. His color notwithstanding, it is my opinion that he is one of the best Arabian stallions alive today. He has correctness and balance of conformation, good legs, and he is a very typy Arabian with a beautiful head. His trot is truly superior and extremely beautiful to see. His sire, Bey Shah, was a very popular name in the show world and Bey Shah’s pedigree is about half Crabbet/American. Nv Beau Bey’s dam was the great mare Bint Miss Fire, x Miss Fire. I particularly like the El Tio and Jaguar blood of Miss Fire.
Ohadi Black Lady, dam of Beaus Black Lady, is the only black ever sired by the great Ben Rabba. It is interesting, however, to mention that Ben Rabba’s dam, chestnut Rollicka, was the product of two blacks, Sarolle and Coalani. Ohadi Black Lady’s dam, Ohadi Moriah, was a gray. She carried not only her sire line blood of the desert bred *Mirage (which is the same sire line of Nv Beau Bey), but also the *Raffles and Skowronek blood I like, as well as that of the outstanding Polish import *Witez II.
In 1988 I had seen the then 3-year old black filly Ohadi Black Lady at the farm of Curtis Cox in Idaho. She had recently been in a terrible accident with a fence and her left hind leg was badly cut, including in her hock. I wanted her then, but Curtis would neither sell nor lease her to me. I kept trying to get him to lease her to me over the next couple of years, but he would not. When Curtis died in 1991 his family held a dispersal sale of his horses. I went to Idaho, hoping to buy Ohadi Black Lady. She was then 6 years old and her left hind leg was terribly disfigured from her healed injury. She was near the end of the sale and I supposed that her disfigured hind leg would cause her to hobble around the sale ring. In my fantasy nobody would want her because of it. How wrong I was! This mare came into the ring with her huge, outstanding trot – and no sign of any lameness. She was awesome. It seemed like several wanted her and had stayed to near the end of the sale to try to get her, but in the end I was the successful bidder.
Ohadi Black Lady had a beautiful, dry, feminine head and a nice neck. When the German writer Betty Finke saw her in 1992, when the mare was 7, Betty said she considered her one of the memorable mares of her trip to the northwestern United States. I have always considered her a memorable mare too.
As Beaus Black Lady matures she looks more and more like her sire, but she also is her dam’s daughter. Her trot shows that she inherited ability from both of her parents. She is truly a beautiful individual of merit.
