This lovely mare was the only black ever sired by the internationally successful chestnut Ben Rabba. It is interestiing to note that Ben Rabba's chestnut dam was the daughter of two black parents, Sarolle and Coalani, and that Sarolle's sire, Rallaf, son of *Raffles, was out of the black mare Chrallah. Egyptian influences have sometimes produced blacks, and the Egyptian imports *Zarife (to whom Ohadi Black Lady has 2 crosses, through his daughters Sarifah and Zareyna) and *Roda appear in Ohadi Black Lady's pedigree. The *Witez II line has also produced a few blacks; Ohadi Black Lady's 3rd dam, the bay Gurrteza, was by *Witez II.
Ohadi Black Lady's dam, Ohadi Moriah, was a typy small gray mare who looked more like her sire, Mirfey, than like her dam, Leading Lady.
Ohadi Black Lady's breeder, the late Curtis Cox, for many years bred quality Crabbet/American Arabians. Curtis, who had Ben Rabba on lease for a few years, bred many good animals.
When Ohadi Black Lady was 3 years old in 1988 she seriously injured her left hind leg in barbed wire. The deep and bad cuts were in both her hock and cannon. It was at that time that Carol Mulder and Janice Siders first saw her at Mr. Cox's. It did not seem certain that she could live, but she did., although her leg was left quite scarred and disfigrured. Janice wanted to lease or buy Ohadi Black Lady from Curtis, but he would not agree. However, Janice never let up on trying to persuade him, but always without success. When Curtis died in 1991 his family dispersed his horses at a private auction at Caldwell, Idaho. People came from several states, and even from Canada, to buy.
Janice Siders went to the auction to try to buy the 6 year old Ohadi Black Lady. The mare was near the end of the sale and people were getting tired, so Janice was hopeful. Also, she expected that Ohadi Black Lady's severly disfigured left hind leg would make her go unsound and perhaps turn other buyers away from wanting her. Far from being lame, the mare trotted into the sale ring with her big, bold, and magnificent Ben Raba trot, just as though she did not have a seriously disfugred hind leg.
Janice did succeed in buying Ohadi Black Lady; she was the second highest seller of the sale. Others beside Janice wanted her!
When the German writer Betty Finke visited the western United States in 1992, she wrote that Ohadi Black Lady was among her favorites of the American Arabian mares she had seen. Betty particulary liked Ohadi Black Lady's very beautiful Arabian head and her lovely, light, feminine neck.
After producing a chestnut Cox-bred colt (the mare was in foal when Janice bought her) and four Siders-bred black colts, Ohadi Black Lady finally, in 2002, at age 17, gave Janice her beautiful black daughter, Beaus Black Lady, by Nv Beau Bey.
Janice then sold Ohadi Black Lady to Jim Hopkins, who had also long wanted her.
