Benzadreen’s dam, Bendeenah, was the second breeding mare I bought when I started out with Arabians (the first had been Marzeya, purchased in 1973). I bought Bendeenah on January 24, 1975, when she was 14, from Clifford S. and Esther Holmes, Modesto, California. I was looking for a quality mare with old Kellogg, Crabbet, and American bloodlines; I had already seen and studied enough to know that was what I wanted.
I bred Bendeenah to Zadir (see him in this reference section). He was a Kellogg-bred horse of outstanding quality, with particularly superior hindquarters. He was just being “rediscovered” in his old age and was in the same area as Aurab; they, along with *Serafix and Abu Farwa, were much the same general type of Arabian horses, although not closely related up front in their pedigrees. They did, however, share many farther back ancestors.
The result of that breeding was Benzadreen. While I had hoped for a good looking foal of outstanding quality, from the beginning Benzadreen more than filled my expectations. She grew into a larger sized mare who was not only correct, but also embodied many of the lovely Arabian traits I wanted. She had perfect overall balance and excellent conformation, including short back, good depth through her heart, good shoulders, and good quarters. I liked her nice Arabian head, her lovely Arabian neck, and her overall Arabian look and high quality. She was undoubtedly one of the best of the Zadir daughters and several people considered her the most magnificent one of all. Magnificent is the single word that describes her.
Her pedigree combines many of the best horses of their time. She was about 75% old Kellogg, which much pleased me, and carried a high percentage of Crabbet blood. Her bloodlines included many Arabians renowned for their exceptional inherited trotting ability; among those were Zadir, Faronek, Ronek, Bahreyn, Gazya, Rabiyat, Rehal, Sidi, Ribal, and *Berk - and others as well. This pedigree not only brought the phenotype I wanted, but also exceptional athletic potential.
Several people wanted to buy Benzadreen or lease her - she definitely had a following - but she was not for sale. She unexpectedly died on April 21, 1993, at age 17. She is the only horse I have ever lost due to an enterolith. I have never bred all of my mares every year so none get bred often or regularly, and Benzadreen was in addition rather opinionated about preferring pasture breeding, besides having been out for awhile being saddle trained, so she had produced only three foals. I thought there was more time than just 17 years - but she is an example of the fact that one never knows what might happen.
