In 2000, Janice Siders and I (Carol Mulder) visited Purple Sage’s breeder, Martha Pierce, because we wanted to see her interesting horses, including the mare Rabbina which we had always considered one of Ben Rabba’s best daughters. Rabbina had been bred and owned by Virginia “Ginny” Spicher, a small breeder and good friend of many years who had died of a brain tumor and her horses dispersed.

At Martha Pierce’s farm we also saw a horse not on her list of stock: the then 26 year old stallion Tora Tornado. Martha explained that he had recently been given to her in his old age so he would have a home. He had not sired any foals for a few years. His quality - type, conformation, balance, and legs - was stunning, and we particularly liked the breeding of his dam with the Ferseyn, Faronek, Ga’zi, and the other good Crabbet/American individuals behind Fejhya. Additionally, in times past Toro Tornado’s sire, Tornado, had been a beautiful and very successful show horse whose dam was the truly lovely Crabbet mare *Silwara, one of our favorites. Mrs. Siders asked Martha if she would breed Tora Tornado to Rabbina for her. Mrs. Pierce did not know if Tora Tornado was still fertile, but she made the breeding and Purple Sage is the result.

Purple Sage is a big Arabian with a good head, nice ears and eyes, a long neck, and good bones and joints. He has an outstanding disposition; he is very “laid-back,” easy going, and unflappable. Nothing bothers him. He is always agreeable, amiable, and easy to handle.

In 2008, Mrs. Siders got a stunning colt by Purple Sage x the Aurfix (by Aurab) daughter, Aur-Miss Vixen. With this colt’s promise, Mrs. Siders decided to sell Purple Sage to Ms. Gisele Roman, who had long been hoping to buy him from Mrs. Siders. The sale was made - and then the fabulous colt died during a heat wave combined with heavy smoke and particles in the air from severe California fires. His baby lungs could not handle this combination of stresses.

That sad fact aside, another Diablo Vista mare, Night Fancy, is in foal to Purple Sage for 2009.
